History
Liverpool was founded in 1892 by the owner of Anfield, who decided to form his own team after Everton left the ground over an argument about rent. He originally wanted to call the club Everton FC but the Football Associated refused to recognise it as such, so had to change it to Liverpool FC. They have played at Anfield ever since, although plans are underway to build a new £160m, 61,000 all-seater stadium at the nearby Stanley Park. They were elected to the Football League in 1894 and have been the most successful club in England since. In 1959 Bill Shankley became Liverpool manager. He was to transform Liverpool into one of the top clubs in Europe. Upon his retirement in 1974, his former assistant took over. This proved an even more successful time for Liverpool. Despite it's successes, the club has been marred by tragedy twice. The first time was in 1985 when 39 spectators died at Heysel; the second was in 1989 when 96 people died at Hillsborough.
