History
Chelsea Football Club was founded in March 1905 at the Rising Sun pub in Fulham, London. They have played at their home ground, Stamford Bridge, since then although it has changed significantly over the time. By September 1905 they had been elected to the Football League and promoted to Division One by the end of their second season. They had no major successes until winning the League Championship in 1955. In the 60's and 70's the club performed well but started to decline. They experienced financial difficulties due to attempts to renovate Stamford Bridge and were forced to sell the freehold of the ground to property developers. In 1982 the club was bought by Ken Bates for £1. In the 90's the property developers were bankrupt and a deal was done with the banks allowing the club to regain control ofthe stadium. Chelsea Pitch Owners was created and in 1997 they purchased the freehold, turnstiles, pitch and the Chelsea FC name, in an effort to ensure that Stamford Bridge can not be sold again. In June 2003, Ken Bates sold Chelsea to Roman Abramovich for £60 million. More than £100 million has since been spent on plaers and the club has enjoyed success under manager Jose Mourinho.
