Wigan Athletic was formed in 1932, buying the ground of the town's former club, Wigan Borough, for £2,850. They originally played in the Cheshire League, and were elected to the Lancashire Combinatn in 1945. They were almost elected to the Football League in 1950, but lost the vote to Scunthorpe United instead. They were founder memembers of the Northern Premier League and in 1978, after 34 attempts, they were finally elected to the Football League. After two seasons they were promoted to the third and managed to hold their place there for 10 years, before being relegated in 1993. The club was purchased by David Whelan in 1995. After a steady progress through the Divisions, they were finally promoted to the Premiership for the 2005-2006 season. They currently play at the JJB Stadium (which they share with The Wigan Warriors Rugby League team). The stadium cost £30 million to buiuld at was completed in time for the 1999-2000 season. In March of 2005, it looked like they would have to play to an empty stadium though, as Greater Manchester police refusted to police their home games due to an ongoing dispute with David Whelan over £300,000 in unpaid costs. The money was paid but the Club are appealing against the payments.
