History
In March 1874, the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel cricket team were trying to stay fit during the winter, so decided to play football. Their first match (which they won) was against a local Rugby Team (Aston Brook St Mary?s) and they had to play the first half of the game under rugby rules and the second half under football rules. In the 1880s, the director of the club, William McGregor, instigated the formation of the Football League by contacting 12 top clubs and proposing they form a league (with the intention of the Welsh and Scottish teams also joining). Aston Villa competed in the first league in 1888, finishing second. They originally played at Wilson Road (Birchfields), moving to Perry Barr in 1878 and then to their current ground in 1897. This ground was originally called the Aston Lower Ground, becoming officially known later as Villa Park In 1936 they were relegated for the first time, rejoining the first division in 1938. The club has since enjoyed success in the mid-70?s through to the early 80?s and then again in the 90?s. In September 2005 the club was put up for sale. July 2006 saw a bid being placed by a local businessman, with a further bid by a UK-based consortium being made in August.
