History
The works side Thames Ironworks Football Club was formed in 1895 by the chairman (Arnold Hills) and foreman (Dave Taylor) of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. In 1896 they joined the London League, winning it in 1898. In 1898 they turned professional and entered the Southern League Second Division. In 1900 the Club became a limited company and it's name was changed to West Ham United Football Club. Also about this time the club moved to the Plaistow Memorial Ground and then to a pitch in Upton Park. This was originally named The Castle but is now called The Boleyn Ground, although it is normally referred to as Upton Park. The ground's original gates are pictured on the Club's crest. In 1919 they joined the Football League and achievied promotion to Division One in 1923. In 1964 they won their first major trophy under manager Ron Greenwood. The capitain at this time was bobby, who went on to captain the World Cup Winning team for England in 1966. In 1965 they won their first European trophy, beating 1860 Munich at Wembley. Greenwood continued to manage West Ham until he was promoted to General Manager in 1975. Although relegated shortly after, they went on to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup Final of 1980. In 1991 they were promoted to the First division, only to be relegated the following season. In 1993 they secured promotion to the Premiership, staying there for10 years until relegation in the summer of 2003. Two seasons later they achieved promotion again.
