History
A local grammar school and Hotspur Cricket Club formed the Hotspur Football club in 1882. They then changed their name to Tottenham Hotspur. Originally playing at The Lee marshes, they moved to Northumberland Park in 1888. Turning professioonal in 1895, they were admitted to the southern league in 1896. In 1899 they moved to a former market garden in High Road, Tottenham, becoming known as White Hart Lane after a local thoroughfare. In 1900 they won the Southern League and then the FA Cup in 1901. They were elected to the Second Division of the Football League in 1908 and were immediately promoted to the First Division. They were relegated in 1928 and were seventh in Second Division by the time the war started. In 1950 they won the Second Division and then went on to win the First Division in 1951, becoming the first club to win both divisions in successive years. Bill Nicholson became manager in 1958. In 1961 they won the double, in 1962 the FA Cup, and the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. In 1967 they won the FA Cup again and finished their in the League. He resigned in 1974. They were relegated in 1977 and soon promoted again, going on to win the FA Cup again in 1981 and 1982. After the new West Stand was built, the club was almost bankruted. It was bought by a property tycoon, Irving Scolar, in 1982. By 1990, he was nearing bankruptcy himself and had to sell the club. The manager at that time, Terry Venables, and Alan Sugar took over the club and paid of it's £20 million debts (with Venables becoming Chief executive). After poor performance in the League, and a legal dispute with Alan Sugar, Venables was removed from the board and later ruled by the High Court to be unfit to be concerned in any way with the management of a company. In 1994 Tottenham was deducted 12 points and banned from the FA Cup for one year for making illegal payments to players. Alan Sugar portested against this asthe people responsible were no longer associated with the club. The ban and the points deduction were both removed. In 2001, Sir Alan Sugar finally sold his controlling interest in the Club to ENIC Sports PLC.br>
