History
Portsmouth Football club was founded in 1898 by the owner of a local brewery. During their first season, they won 20 of their 28 leagues matches, becoming runners-up of the Southern League. They went on to win the Southern League in 1901/1902.
In 1920-21 they gained a place in the Third Division, finishing 12th. In 1924 they were promoted to the Second Division, gaining promotion to the First Division in 1927.
They managed to survive relegation in the First Division and when Football was resumed after World War II they won the 1946-47 League and again the following year. The team started to struggle towards the end of the 50's and were relegated in 1959. The 60's and 70's saw them spending their time in either the Second or Third Division. In 1976, the club was facing bankruptcy and had to rely upon a local newspaper to raise money from supporters. They were relegated to the Fourth Division in 1978 and soon after became infamous for hooliganism.
In the late 80's they started to return to form but yet again struggled financially. In 1988 the club was sold to Jim Gregory, a London businessman. In 1996 the club was sold to Terry Venables for £1, who went on to sell it to Martin Gregory (son of the former chairman). In 1998 the club went into financial administration. Milan Mandaric became the new chairman and started to save the club by investing. Harry Redknapp was brought in as manager and soon took Portsmouth to the Premier League.
In January 2006, Mandaric stated he was selling a percentage of the club to Alexandre Gaydamak, with Portsmouth receiving a cash injection in the region of £15 million. Full ownership of the club was transferred to Gadamak in 2006.
Since it's formation, Portsmouth have played at Fratton Park. Plans were made at the end of the 2003-04 season to develop a new stadium next to the existing site (in a disused rail depot). However, these plans have since been changed and work is expected to start in the summer of 2006 on redeveloping the existing site.
