History
Manchester United were formed in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot, originally being called Newton Heath (L&YR) FC. After financial difficulties in 1902, the club was taken over by JH Davies, changing its name to Manchester United. One of the most successful Football clubs, their lists of honours are many. They have also had the highest average attendances in English football for the past 34 seasons. Old Trafford was bombed during the war so they had to play at Manchester City's ground for a time.
Under Sir Matt Busby the club started it's success story, winning the League in 1956 and 1957. Tragedy following though when eight of the club's players were killed in the Munich air disaster of 1958. After some success in the 60's the club didn't achieve much (being relegated in 1974). Alex Ferguson took over in 1987, nearly bring the club to relegation in 1989, but soon brought about changes to their form in the 1990's, winning the FA Cup in 1990 and The European cup Winners' Cup in 1991. The club was floated on the Stock Exchange in 1991, valued at £18 million. In May 2005, Malcolm Glazer started a takeover bid for the Club, valuing approximately £800 million. He was able to acquire a controlling interest in the club, going on to increase his share to 75%, needed to make it private again. By 28th June, he had increased his share to 98%, enough for a compulsory buyout of all remaining shareholders. He then went on the appoint his sons to the board. The debt taken on by Glazer to finance the club was between the family and the club. In July 2006 it was announced that it will now all be with the club; £660 million, on which interest payments will be £62 million a year.
