History
Manchester City were formed in 1880 by church wardens and were originally called West Gorton (St. Marks). When they moved to a new ground in 1887 they were renamed Ardwick AFC, only becoming Manchester City Football Club in 1894 after they were reformed following financial difficulties after joining the Football League in 1892. In 1920 a fire at Hyde Road destroyed the main stand. They moved to Maine Road in 1923 and then to the City of Manchester Stadium in 2003. The stadium is leased from the city council but they spent in the region of £35million upgrading it. Their first success was in 1899 when they won the Second Division, gaining promotion. They then went on to win the FA Cup in 1904 and finished second in the League. After they won the League in 1937 only to be relegated the following year. After success in the 60's and 70's, the club's fortunes were different in the 80's, having 7 managers and being relegated twice. Under Peter Reid things did pick up but went on from being one of the founding teams of the Premier League to being in Division Two 1998.
